Subida Work
Historical background and composition
The work in Subida, located in the hamlet by the same name in the municipality of Cormons, was built during the Cold War and consisted of:
- one observatory command post (open to visitors): it was the hub of every plain work: in fact, the firing from the emplacements and the neighbouring defence operations were supposed to be coordinated from here;
- four semi-armoured P positions (for anti-tank unit) with front armour: P1 (structure open for visitors), P2, P3, P4;
- one P position in tank hull in a tank: P5. This position consisted of an entire M26 “Pershing” tank, whose engine had been removed but equipped with full armament, located inside a tank made of concrete;
- two M positions (for machine gun unit) with total armour and 60° firing range: M1 (structure open to visitors), M2;
- three M positions on metal turret with four slits: M3 (structure open for visitors), M4, M5.
Also, near the P2 and M2 positions there was a small barracks that housed the soldiers tasked with defending the work.
Purpose
The purpose of the work was to block Regional Road 409, which connects the towns of Plešivo and Castelletto Zeglo in the Slovenian Collio area to Cormons, and therefore the Gorizia plain.
